What are teacher strikes really about? We need to discuss the wider context to understand why teachers feel the current situation is unsustainable.https://t.co/rkfrHcgKUp#strikes pic.twitter.com/3jFoYwgXVe

February Innovation Day

Thursday January 9th was our third Innovation Day this academic year at Chobham Academy. Students in Years 7-10 and 12 took part in a variety of sessions and activities.

Year 7 students visited the local theatre to the pantomime Dick Whittington, students were looking closely and the skills required in performances like this, singing, acting, dancing and the job roles involved from costume design to lighting director.

Ben Year 7 – "I really enjoyed the performance it was something, the acting and singing was really good and I picked up tips for my dram lessons. The importance of audience interaction and humour was something I noticed".

Year 8 students were on sight at Chobham Academy carrying out bespoke sessions around crime scenes, forensic science and how to conduct investigations in crime. We were fortunate enough to secure the services of a police dog handler and a senior investigating officer from South Yorkshire police. They spoke to student again about all the different job roles and career pathways available to them should they have an interest in solving crime.

Sharae Year 8 - “It was really informative and mad me interested in pursueing a career in being a detective”.

Edwina Year 8 - “It was an interesting day it was good to see the police dog and learn how it tracks humean scents. The finger print tests were really interesting and figuring out how to solve crimes".

Year 9 students spent the day looking at our local area and the transformation it has undergone post 2012. Students went out in to East Village and looked at the current business and potential business opportunities there is here. The student carried out investigations in to the impact the Olympics has had on the area and what is next for E20.

Year 10 students were involved in sessions linked to healthy relationships and understanding your body. The day was a great success and students asked lots of questions on things they had no idea about.

Habib in Year 10 found the workshops engaging and he enjoyed the kinaesthetic approach to learning through role plays in some sessions.

Aryan Year 10 - "We learnt about trust and building relationships with the right people, one of the effects of building relationships with wrong people could be joint enterprise and the impacts associated with it were interesting to learn. We learnt about tips for successful relationships and compromising with people".

Year 12 students had a variety of workshops based on the themes independence, personal finance and charitable work. We secured the services of the company MY Bank who came and educated students about the personal finance decisions they need to begin to think about.

Reece Year 12 – "The day was really useful in the My bank sessions, I learnt about trust funds and how to access them, the importance of budgeting and managing your money and what direct debits and standing orders are. I would welcome more days like this its really useful and helps us with life schools we have not really been taught anything about”

The day was a great success and we look forward to our fourth Innovation Day 4 on March 25th.
