Black Lives Matter

Black Lives Matter

The whole Chobham Academy community has been much affected by the events of recent weeks in the USA and the UK.

We have been reflecting upon our own responsibilities and the opportunities open to us to make a positive difference. We endorse the view expressed by the Harris Federation that supporting young black people to achieve the best possible exam grades is a key way of improving their life chances, however, we feel our school can also do other things to help build a successful and sustainable local community where young people have plentiful opportunities to thrive.

Chobham Academy is therefore committed to a thorough and ongoing review of the way we work to better serve our black and other ethnic communities in the following ways:

  • By reviewing and amending our curriculum to ensure that all students better understand their heritage and place in today’s world
  • By ensuring that our students understand the political system they live in and how they can most effectively influence their local and wider communities
  • By ensuring that our students are equipped with the social skills, ambition and resilience to make a positive difference in their communities
  • Giving Chobham students the best careers guidance and practical support in assisting them into higher education and employment opportunities.

These objectives will be reflected in actions; both to further develop the school’s culture and to put in place practical activities which benefit students.

Over the next few weeks we will consult on next steps with our school community (students, staff and parents).  This will lead to Chobham having a new strategy in place for September 2020.
